Battle of the beats: Martial arts arrives on Beat Saber dance platform

The Fight is the Dance

Sometime last year, an amazing VR production team, Mod very kindly opened up their studios and introduced me to a Willy Wonka world of mixed reality, VR and all the stuffs of pure imagination. Among all these goodies is a hit VR game called Beat Saber. A game with light-sabers, where players hit shiny blocks to time – like Dance Dance Revolution, but SHINIER. I decided a mod had to happen, so I can fight through music – Pirates of the Silk Road is the result.

Pirates of the Silk Road

The making of Pirates of the Silk Road

Playing Beat Saber, the martial artist fangirl in me was in love. I didn’t want to dance (which is what the game seems to be designed to do) , I wanted to see about fighting, or ok…fight dancing.

So, cue creation, I invited some kick arse musicians…Michael Sheridan (guitars) and Kirke Godfrey (additional drums + mix), and we made a track that allowed for dance and martial arts all at once.

I teamed up with Chongwei Zhang (Zhang Shifu) from TK Martial Arts, who is a serious multi-championship winning martial artist/ stuntperson/actor/ fight choreographer. He generously provided advice and choreography ideas to this fight-dance genre we seemed to have created. Then of course, I had to program a whole lot of boxes in Beat Saber world to somewhat capture all that bad-assery.

Do not let my calm exterior fool you, I’m MOSTLY doing my best NOT to let the saber kill me.

This is the result of all that collaborating, where the composing process is all about programming fight moves in game world, writing the piece, re-testing a move and moving beats to suit…composing has never been this physical and this stupidly fun.

Special thanks (again) to

Mod for loaning space and doing up this fantastic mixed reality shoot (Michela, Mish, Illia, Maize you folks are way awesome!). This all started because Michela threw me down a mod challenge, so it’s really her fault. 🙂

Macquarie University (Rhett Loban) for loaning time, space, people and equipment so we could test and test again. Rhett is a PhD candidate who has done some amazing VR work on the Torres Strait Island VR experience, which has won him The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander STEM Professional Career Achievement Award

Beautiful art of Pirates of the Silk Road by Queenie Chan who is a super talented manga artist. Check out her stories!

Most of all, thank you to the testers who test played the mod.

Episode 2 – Bluebeard – OUT NOW

Dear Spiderlings

It is here. The 2nd episode of Twisted Tales. This time it’s Bluebeard (not the pirate). In my twist, Bluebeard is a pervert who uses religion to destroy women and children…in my twist, he doesn’t quite get away with it.

The Song

The voicings in Bluebeard are built on the …_ _ _ … morse code SOS signal. It features a rocking guitar solo by Michael Sheridan and multiple time signature changes. (I challenge you to figure it out – only because I still am)

Lead & female backing Vocals: Yunyu
Males Backing Vocals: Christo Alexander
Guitars: Michael Sheridan
Organ: Alexander Nettelbeck
Bass: Dave Howell
Drums: Ed Rodrigues

The Manga

Queenie Chan believes that Bluebeard is really Henry VIII. So she’s created this awesomeness…a circular manga that never never ends!

This post was brought to you by Mr Goat, who is now performing with Her Royal Madness, Yunyu. He functions as a town-crier of sorts, but he doesn’t cry, he mostly bleats.

Tours Tours Tours – Her Royal Madness – Yunyu is on the move

Dear Spiderlings

If you ever wondered about where your Prince Charming has gone, why that frog never became a prince when you braved all good sense and Kissed it – then Twisted Tales is for you.

By projecting fairytales into a modern paradigm Yunyu takes them far far away from the benign stories we knew as children, corrupting everyone from Alice in Wonderland and Bluebeard to the Pied Piper and Pinocchio. Twisting the stories into songs, Yunyu meshes them with contemporary animation and manga art to give a whole new meaning to Disney on ice.

Yunyu’s manager, an award-winning composer/producer who straddles both the theatrical and musical worlds, made his mind to sign her just ten minutes into a showcase set. “I’ve seen a lot of artists work with visuals but they’re somewhat overlaid and mostly make no sense to the music or the mood and they can even be distracting.  Yunyu’s visuals connect in a compelling and emotional way to the mood of the music. I found the balance very exciting and can envisage where it could develop to”, says manager Lee McIver.
In this cross-art form collaboration, Yunyu has teamed up with New York Times #1 Best Selling Manga Artist Queenie Chan and leading animators from around the world to give their characters life. Merging live music with cutting edge technology, this innovative show will be brought to you by Yunyu, her five piece band, VJ and designer Imogen Ross.  Twisted Tales will lead you down the yellow brick road to a universe so twisted that you’ll need a trail of breadcrumbs to find your way home.

Touring to Byron Bay, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney throughout May & June, take this opportunity to see Twisted Tales come to life in a totally new way.

This post is written by The Goat. Most times he wears a mask and prances about on stage while her Royal Madness performs. Online, he has recently been ordered to write all the information dissemination stuff. In some cultures, he is referred to as the town crier, but this isn’t quite accurate. He doesn’t cry…he mostly bleats.

Dorothy journeys round the interweb

Dorothy from Twisted Tales has surely travelled. Her Royal Madness is very happy and has ordered me (by holding my last piece of radish ransom…) to put all the links by all the awesome people round the internets who have so far put Dorothy on their blogs and publications here:

I should also mention the Tweet by Neil Gaiman. Since her Royal Madness was indeed very happy about this occurrence and upped my radish rations for that day. Here’s hoping she does it again. (the rations I mean)

Really loved this video and song –

Thanking you for the linkage! And a hearty Congrats to Her Royal Madness’ collaborators Manga Artist Queenie Chan and The Commonist!!
